Uncertain Author
"The Invention of the Future" Room, National Museum of Music
July 12th, 3:00 PM
This is the premiere concert of the replica of our anonymous harpsichord from 1724, now on display in the "Expressions of Power" room, with harpsichordist Helder Sousa and musicologist Ana Freijo.
The "Uncertain Author" concert is the result of an interdisciplinary project focusing on anonymous 17th-century keyboard music contained in manuscript sources preserved in Portuguese archives. This performance explores the creative power of anonymity, both from the point of view of music and space, adopting a new performative genre, which we call a "topophilic concert" – in homage to Gaston Bachelard, who coined the term "topophilia" in his famous essay The Poetics of Space. So, what does this new genre propose? Listening to and reflecting on music in its concrete place of performance, thus giving new life to the objects that make up the space.
In this presentation, anonymous keyboard music will enter into dialogue with the small anonymous harpsichord of 1724, through the recent replica by Frank Hollinga, commissioned by the National Museum of Music.
