Valses nobles et sentimentales

August 22nd, 4:00 PM
Anne Kaasa, piano

Norwegian pianist based in Portugal, Anne Kaasa is described by the French music magazine ‘Le Monde de la Musique’ as “a pianist who stands out in the abundant world of soloists for the depth of her interpretations, the fluidity of her musical discourse, and the delicacy of her touch”. Anne Kaasa studied at the Trondheim Conservatory, and later with pianist Edson Elias in Paris, as a scholarship recipient from the French state. She also received guidance from pianist Vladimir Viardo.

In this program he will perform ‘Valses nobles et sentimentales’, a work by Maurice Ravel dated 1911 in which a series of waltzes are successively transfigured as if in a dream. We will also hear Ravel's Jeux d’eau, from 1901, a remarkable exercise in representing water in music. Around these fundamental scores of 20th-century piano literature, we will also hear two nocturnes and a ballad by Chopin, as a testament to the earlier Romantic tradition, and, in a leap to the Iberian Peninsula, ‘Arpa-eolea’ by the Portuguese composer Cláudio Carneyro and ‘Fantasia Baetica’ by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, which offer contrasting perspectives on how to translate the local landscape into music.
