From Tile to Nature!
A Discovery Trail Between Calheta Palace and the Tropical Botanical Garden, with a Tile Painting Workshop for the General Public and Families
Open Azulejo: Calheta Palace
What if tiles could help us discover nature in a different way?
During a visit to the Open Azulejo: Calheta Palace exhibition, participants are invited to explore the fauna and flora motifs featured on the tiles and then seek them out in the Tropical Botanical Garden. Through drawing or photography, they document their discoveries, observing the similarities and differences between the painted images and their natural counterparts. In the next stage, inspired by the shapes and colours they have encountered, participants create their own tile, painted using the majolica technique.
The Open Azulejo: Calheta Palace project opens the doors of a space that is usually closed to the public, allowing visitors to discover tilework in the very settings for which it was originally conceived. Through stories, images and the marks of time, the Palace and the unique atmosphere of the Tropical Botanical Garden provide experiences that combine observation, discovery and creativity, bringing each participant closer to this important heritage.
Please note!
Tiles cannot be collected on the same day, as they must be fired in a kiln.
Collection arrangements and dates will be provided during the workshop, but the minimum turnaround time is 48 hours.
