TAPADA NACIONAL DE MAFRA

With 833 hectares of mature forest and almost three centuries of history, Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a living testimony to Portugal’s natural and cultural heritage. Once a leisure ground for the royal court, it is now a sustainably managed biodiversity sanctuary and a unique centre for nature research and conservation. Home to around 370 catalogued species, it reflects the perfect harmony between historical legacy and ecosystem preservation.
Through a diverse range of experiences, visitors are invited to explore this ancient forest, admire its beauty throughout the seasons, and discover the wildlife that roams freely within it.

• On foot – Explore the 6 signposted walking trails and discover the rich fauna, flora and historical heritage of the Tapada.
• By mountain bike (MTB) – Venture along 2 dedicated MTB trails and 2 additional cycling routes, through paths, climbs and descents that reveal the Tapada’s unique landscape.
• Running / Trail running – Run surrounded by nature on a dedicated trail-running route, with the option to use the other trails at your own pace.

PALÁCIO NACIONAL DE MAFRA

The Mafra National Palace is a Baroque architectural complex, consisting of a royal palace, basilica, convent, garden and park. Its construction began in 1717 and the basilica was consecrated in 1730. It has important collections of Italian sculpture, Italian and Portuguese painting, vestments, as well as an imposing library, two carillons, six historic organs and an 18th century infirmary. It has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2019.
Built in 1711 by King John V to fulfill a vow for the birth of a first-born son, Mafra Palace is the most important monument of Portuguese Baroque. The former royal estate occupies more than 1,200 hectares and the Palace has an area of approximately 38,000 m2, making it one of the largest monuments in Europe.
For this Palace, King John V commissioned sculptures and paintings from Italian and Portuguese masters, Italian vestments and French tapestries and, in Flanders, two carillons with 92 bells – the largest carillon of its time. It also includes a set of six historic organs in the basilica, an important library with approximately 30,000 volumes, the largest bookstore in a single room in all of Europe. Of the convent core, the infirmary stands out, the only surviving part of the period.


MUSEU NACIONAL DA MÚSICA

The National Museum of Music holds one of the richest European collections of musical instruments from the 16th to the 21st century, representing a wide range of musical practices, some of which are classified as “national treasures.”
Among the “national treasures” in its collection are instruments manufactured in Portugal, such as the harpsichord by Joaquim José Antunes (1758), and the violins and cellos by Joaquim José Galrão. Other instruments of great value and rarity include the Pascal Taskin harpsichord built in 1782 for the court of King Louis XVI of France, the Boisselot & Fils piano brought to Lisbon by Franz Liszt during his Iberian tour of 1844–1845, the baroque oboe by Eichentopf, and a cello by Antonio Stradivari that once belonged to King Luís of Portugal. The museum also preserves important archives, such as those of composer Alfredo Keil, author of the current Portuguese national anthem.
