Belém Tower, Av. Brasília · 1400-038 Lisbon

A monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, and an iconic symbol of the city of Lisbon and of Portugal worldwide, Belém Tower is historically and artistically linked to the Jerónimos Monastery and to the Portuguese Discoveries.

Built between 1514 and 1519 on a basalt outcrop some distance from the northern bank of the river, it combines two distinct architectural models: the tall tower, inspired by the medieval keep, and the bastion, a modern military defensive structure.
