Largo Infante Dom Henrique, 2440-109, Batalha
A memorial monument to the Battle of Aljubarrota and a royal pantheon, whose construction began at the end of the 14th century with the patronage of D. João I, the Dominican Monastery of Batalha is the most significant building of Portuguese Gothic architecture.
Its vast outbuildings today constitute an excellent example of the evolution of medieval architecture up to the beginning of the 16th century, from the unprecedented experiment of late Gothic to the decorative profusion of Manueline. A National Monument, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983.
Located in the center of the town of Batalha, the construction of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, also known as the Monastery of Batalha, was the result of fulfilling a promise made by King D. João I, in gratitude for the victory at Aljubarrota on August 14, 1385, which secured his throne and guaranteed Portugal's independence.
