Convento de Cristo · 2300-000 Tomar
Convento de Cristo is the name by which the monumental complex consisting of the Templar Castle of Tomar, the Renaissance Convent of the Order of Christ, the convent enclosure, today known as Mata dos Sete Montes, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and the convent aqueduct, also known as the Aqueduto dos Pegões, is generally known. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, it includes some of the most expressive testimonies of the history of Portuguese architecture. The seven centuries of its construction i the most significant moments in the history of Portugal.
The Castle was built in 1160 with the founding of Tomar by the Knights Templar. After the extinction of the Knights Templar in 1312, it became the headquarters of the Order of Christ and under the administration of Prince Henry the Navigator (1420-60), the convent quarters were built around two Gothic cloisters: the so-called Lavagem cloister and the Cemetery.
