Built between 1420 and 1433 by order of the eighth Count of Barcelos, D. Afonso, illegitimate son of King D. João I, the Palace of the Dukes was the residence of the Dukes of Bragança during the 16th century, a title granted by his brother D. Pedro, giving rise to one of the richest and most powerful manor houses in the Iberian Peninsula, the House of Bragança.
Although it was the residence of Dukes in the 15th century, it was gradually abandoned and fell into disrepair in the following centuries, and in the 19th century, at the time of the French invasions, it was converted into a military barracks.
It was in the following century, between 1937 and 1959, that the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança underwent a wide-ranging and complex renovation project, carried out based on a project by the architect Rogério de Azevedo.
At the same time, the current contents were acquired, consisting of works of art dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, with special emphasis on the collections of tapestries, furniture, ceramics, paintings and armory.
The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança opened to the public on June 25, 1959, the year in which it also became the Official Residence of the President of the Republic in the North of the country.
Let yourself be impressed by the monumentality and beauty of this space and be sure to visit the Church of São Miguel and the Castle of Guimarães, all located on Monte Latito, a landscaped area of ??approximately 39 thousand square meters that serves as a leisure and pedestrian area between these three National Monuments.
