A masterpiece of Portuguese architecture, the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, commonly known as the Jerónimos Monastery, as it was intended for the Order of Saint Jerome, has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. The church, with religious services and opening hours for heritage visits, and the cloister, secularized in the 19th century, form the most visited heritage complex in the country.
The building was built on the initiative of King Manuel I, whose reign lasted from 1495 to 1521, and depended on substantial financial resources and demanding artistic resources, which this powerful patron made available. It is located in one of the most prestigious areas of Lisbon, a historical and monumental setting next to the River Tagus, the place from which ships and caravels departed during the Age of Discoveries.
D. Manuel I ordered the construction of the Belém Tower with the aim of protecting not only the port of Lisbon, the mouth of the River Tagus, but also the Jerónimos Monastery, which was under construction at the time. At the time, the shape of the mouth of the River Tagus provided effective proximity and visual connection between the two royal enterprises – the Tower was built on the river, 250 meters from the bank, on a basalt outcrop, and the Monastery was built on the bank, facing Restelo beach.
The Jerónimos Monastery is a monument with several centuries of history, which layout and accesses have limitations. During busy periods, these constraints may result in queues for entry, which in some cases may exceed 2 hours.
Residents of the country have 52 days of free entry per year to museums, monuments and palaces, on any day of the week.
“Access 52” tickets are not available for issue at this online ticket office.
