Hosted in the Palácio dos Biscainhos, the Museu dos Biscainhos offers its visitors a journey through the daily life of the eighteenth-century nobility in Portugal through the building, its collections and the magnificent Baroque garden, one of the most significant of this period in Portugal.
Built in the 17th century and transformed in the first half of the 18th century, the Palace was the home of the Counts of Bertiandos for 300 years, and opened to the public as a Museum on 11 February 1978.
With the building and its gardens classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1949, the permanent exhibition at the Museu dos Biscainhos illustrates the context of Portuguese noble society, within the context of a manor house from the Baroque period, mainly comprising collections of decorative arts, with special emphasis on the collections of national and European paintings and Portuguese sculpture.
The rich heritage of the Jardim dos Biscainhos, one of the most expressive examples of the Baroque that have survived in Portugal, was reinforced in 2020 with the awarding of the Historic Garden Quality Seal by the Portuguese Association of Historic Gardens.
